Where DEF is used

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is required by every BS6 diesel vehicle fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The system injects DEF into the exhaust, where it converts harmful NOx into nitrogen and water vapour.

If your vehicle has a separate blue filler cap beside the diesel tank, it runs on DEF.

Common questions

Does my vehicle need DEF?

If it is a BS6 diesel with an SCR system, yes. The clearest sign is a second, smaller filler cap — usually blue — next to the diesel filler.

What happens if I run out of DEF?

The vehicle warns you first, then limits engine power to force a refill. It is a designed protection, not a fault, and it clears once DEF is topped up.

Can I use water or a substitute instead of DEF?

No. DEF is a precise 32.5% urea solution made to ISO 22241. Anything else damages the SCR catalyst, which is an expensive repair and is not covered by warranty.

How much DEF does a vehicle use?

Typically 3-6% of diesel consumption, so roughly 3 to 6 litres for every 100 litres of diesel. The exact figure depends on the engine and how it is driven.
